The 24 hour Crisis and Referral Centre in Health Canada's National Employee Assistance Program is currently looking for part-time candidates for the position of Telephone Counsellor. The successful applicants will primarily be available for overnight duty, i.e. 11pm to 7:30am, as well as evening duty as required, 5:45 pm to 11:00 pm.
The responsibilities of the Crisis and Referral Centre counsellors include responding to incoming calls on a 24/7 basis and assessing the degree of urgency of each call, as well as determining the admissibility of each caller and ensuring that the clients' psycho-social needs have been adequately attended to.
The counsellors must be prepared to provide immediate counselling over the phone to clients in crisis. In addition, they must provide consultative services to employees, referral agents, supervisors and administrators.
For non-urgent cases, counsellors will refer clients to a member counsellor of our National Network of Mental Health Professionals.
In addition, the successful applicant will be intervening in a variety of other cases such as responding to Critical Workplace Incidents, processing requests for Specialized Organizational Services and for the Emergency Preparedness Response Team.
The candidates must:
- have a Master's Degree (or 2nd year doctorate) in psychology, social work, or counselling/education
- be a member of a professional association
- be bilingual
- have computer proficiency
- be minimally available 1 consecutive week of overnight duty per month as well as 2 evenings per month
