Dr. Jörg-Rüdiger Sack, born
in Duisburg, Germany, received a M.C.S. ("Diplom") degree from
the University of Bonn, Germany, and a Ph.D. from McGill University,
Montréal. His research interests include
algorithms, data structures, distributed and parallel computing,
computer graphics, geographic information systems and foremost
computational geometry. He is founding editor in-chief of the journals
Computational Geometry-Theory and Applications, and
Journal of Spatial Information Science, and editor of
Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds. In 1996 he
was awarded an industrial NSERC Chair in Applied Parallel Computing
with a focus on spatial modeling; in 2001, the
Chair was renewed with participation by SUN Microsystems. He is the principal
investigator in an R&D project supported in part by SUN and NSERC
on developing an intelligent system for Geographic Information
Services.
More recently, he had been appointed a SUN-HPCVL Chair.
He has been theme and project leader for the NCE(Networks
of Centers of Excellence) Geoide. Dr. Sack had been awarded a Carleton University research award. He is a founding member of
and Carleton's leading scientist
in the High Performance Computing Virtual
Laboratory. He has been a member of NSERC's Committee on
Research Partnerships and a member of the
Committee on Grants and Scholarships
and has been Group Chair for
Mathematics/Statistics/Computing and Information Sciences.
Dr. Sack has been a member of, and Carleton's
liaison for, Nelligan
O'Brien Payne's
Consulting Group on Intellectual Property. He has also been a member of the C3.ca Board of Directors.
He has been appointed to the
College of Reviewers
for the Canada Research Chairs programme.
He has been serving on an advisory committee to the
DFG (German Research Council)
for the
Excellence Initiative
where, for the current round, he is (until 2016) a member of the
joint commission.
He has been appointed as a committee member (2017) for
the Excellence Strategy.
He has been a member of the
National Resources Allocation Committee for
Compute Canada.
He served as Science Advisor to the
German Embassy, Ottawa,
to foster scientific collaboration between German and Canadian academic institutions and to establish
the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research .
He served as a member of the committee on G8 Research Councils Initiative on Multilateral Research Funding, the
CFI Cyber-infrastructure Workshop, and the Tricouncil+ Consultation Workshop on Big Data and Digital Scholarship.
He has been the inaugural chair of the CS-NSERC Liaison Committee.
He has been instrumental in the creation of the new national organization for Computer Science
CS-Can/Info-Can . He had the honour to serve on Excellenceinitiative panels
for the DFG and the German Council of Science and Humanities.
He served as member and is currently chairing the
Scientific Advisory Board of the Zuse Institute, Berlin .
He is subject-chair for Computer Science
also chairs Elsevier's Scopus Board, the
Scopus Content Selection & Advisory Board.
He has recently been appointed
Executive Editor and co-editor in-chief of the journal
Computational Geometry-Theory and Applications.
