About Me
I did my undergraduate degree at Queen's University in Civil Engineering in the Structural stream. After I graduated in 2007, I moved to Ottawa and worked for a year as a structural engineering consultant, mainly focusing on bridge rehabilitations. After a year I decided to go back to school and am now doing my Masters at Carleton in Fire Safety Engineering.
Undergraduate Studies
I excelled at math and physics in high school, partially because they were my favourite subjects, so engineering was a natural choice for my postsecondary education. My grade 12 physics teacher was a civil engineer, and I believe that having her as a role model was influential in giving me confidence to enter an intellectually challenging field that is male dominated.
Graduate Studies
I recently started my Masters at Carleton in September of 2008 in Fire Safety Engineering. I am currently taking 3 graduate courses this term, and will take another 3 next term, before starting research for my thesis next year.
Women in Science and Engineering
When I started my Masters I found out, to my surprise that I am only one of two female students in the program; this means that I am the only woman in all of my classes. So I joined WISE to get to know some other women who are in a similar situation. We can relate to each other and provide support of one another. WISE provides great opportunities to make new friends with other strong women, volunteer at events, and attend interesting speaker presentations. I am looking forward to a successful year with WISE.
Other Interests
When I am not working I like to relax by hanging out with friends, watching tv, doing outdoor activities (like camping or snowboarding), and trying new things.
