About Me
I grew up in Toronto, and moved to Ottawa just a few years ago before beginning my degree. Although my degree in in Computer Science, I'm a bit of an "information sponge" and interested many subjects (including cognitive science, Zen Buddhism, and evolutionary biology.) I'm still not entirely sure what I'd like to do once I'm finished my degree, but digital security and privacy have always interested me, so I hope to pursue that further.
Undergraduate Studies
I remember in my last year of high school being very indecisive about what to major in at university. I was torn between journalism, electrical and mechanical engineering, and a few other things. I still have an interest in investigative journalism and the dedication that line of work requires, but I'm really glad that I chose Computer Science. Tinkering with technology has always been a part of my life, from the first time I wrote a line of HTML code in second grade. I won't pretend that it's an easy degree to pursue, but the struggles make the victories that much more rewarding. Persistence is key!
Women in Science and Engineering
The reason I joined WISE in the first place was to meet other women who shared my interest in science. I enjoy meeting other like-minded people regardless of gender, but it's a fact that women are still outliers in many fields. I signed up for the mentoring program, and was matched with a great mentor in the School of Computer Science! It really helps to know someone who has been through the same things you're going through now, and who understands the stresses of undergrad! This has really shown me the value of a support network in pursuing your goals.
Besides the fact that everyone is super nice, WISE is a great way to make connections with people in your department, find interesting events, and learn about things like scholarships or internship opportunities that are relevant to you. Signing up for the mailing list is a good first step, because then you will be notified about upcoming events. I would also recommend signing up for the mentoring program also, whether you are looking for a mentor or would like to be one.
Other Interests
I have a strong artistic side, and enjoy expressing this through writing fiction and poetry. Nothing published yet, but it's a life dream to see one of my books in print someday! I also like DIY projects when I have the time for them. Whether it's knitting a scarf or refurbishing a thrift-store chair, I find making things with your own hands to be more satisfying that simply purchasing it.
