Undergrad: Engineering Physics (University of British Columbia)
Graduate: Biomedical Engineering (Carleton University)
About Me
I am a recent graduate of the Biomedical Engineering Masters' program at Carleton University. I enjoy getting involved in various activities and groups both related to and outside my discipline.
Undergraduate Studies
I did my undergraduate in Engineering Physics with a specialization in Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia. While there, I was very involved with residence activities, organising intramurals teams, and my engineering undergraduate societies (Fizz and EUS). I had various reasons for choosing engineering and EngPhys in particular, mostly to do with enjoying math, physics, puzzles, and challenge. My program had several hands-on team-based courses: a robotics competition course in 2nd year, and 4th and 5th year project courses. I also did co-op at some small hi-tech companies and I spent one co-op term in the Netherlands at the University of Twente doing a biomedical research project. I took some extra biophysics and biorobotics courses in my undergrad and decided I'd like to pursue that path.
Graduate Studies
I recently completed my Master's in Biomedical Engineering at Carleton which consisted of 6 courses, one seminar course, and a thesis. I chose the biomedical instrumentation stream and did my thesis on electromagnetic coil sensors for detecting breathing with Dr. Andy Adler as my supervisor. I am currently doing a separate research project with Dr. Adler.
Women in Science and Engineering
While doing my grad studies I have been working on an Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation Youth Science and Technology Outreach Program (MRI YSTOP) in the Ottawa area with Dr. Monique Frize. As part of this project I work with school boards, post-secondary institutions, companies, and WISE to plan outreach activities that expose high school students to science, engineering, and technology. I have coordinated activities such as Carleton's Go ENG Girl, Design Tomorrow's World, industry tours, and the Pathmakers program and I have also acted as a Carleton representative at Ontario Network of Women In Engineering meetings. As a WISE Outreach Officer I am hoping to associate these activities more closely with WISE in order to keep them sustainable. I also hope to integrate and promote other Carleton groups that provide outreach such as the Engineering Recruitment representatives, Virtual Ventures, Engineers Without Borders, and the Carleton Student Engineering Society.
Other Interests
I enjoy playing soccer competitively and have started playing hockey since moving to Ontario. Since I don't have a car I bike, rollerblade, skate or walk pretty much everywhere (especially with a bus strike). I miss skiing on the mountains in Vancouver, but have taken up snowboarding here instead.
