Scheduling Jobs using HPCVL (Carleton) Resources

General Guidelines

As more and more users wish to use HPCVL Carleton's computing facilities steps must be taken to ensure that all users can complete their experiments in an efficient and timely manner. When there are only a few number of users this task is trivial but as operations expand coordinating an equitable distribution of resources among processes becomes difficult.

It is the policy of the lab managers at HPCVL Carleton to guarantee that users are able to gain access to computing resources in a seamless and efficient manner given current usage levels. In order to achieve this the lab uses scheduling software to automate the task or job queuing and resource management. In order to ensure that all users have fair and equitable access to computing resources HPCVL administrators must insist that all users adhere to scheduling policies and use the appropriate scheduling software. All users are advised to adhere to this policy since failing to do so could compromise experiment results and cause other users a lot of grief. All processes found violating scheduling policies will be terminated by system administrators to ensure an acceptable standard or performance for all users of the system.

Using Schedulers

All jobs running on HPCVL gear at Carleton must be submitted through the use of scheduling software running on the host machine. This software is designed to ensure that all processes are queued and executed in an efficient and timely manner. Users should familiarize themselves with the proper use of scheduling software for both the Beowulf and the SunFire since the integrity of their experiment results depend on it.

Scheduling Jobs on The SunFire

The SunFire at HPCVL Carleton University uses Sun's GridEngine as the scheduling software. GridEngine is a very robust and easy to use software package allowing users to manage their jobs. Information on using GridEngine can be found on the HPCVL FAQ (link on this page) or at the Sun Website.

Scheduling Jobs on The Beowulf

All jobs submitted on the Beowulf use the Maui Scheduler for the proper queuing and management of jobs. Like GridEngine the Maui scheduler is a full featured resource management and job scheduling tools that is easy to use. More information on the proper configuration and use of the Maui Scheduler can be found on the On-Line Resources section of this page.
