Reserving HPCVL (Carleton) Computing Resources
Occasionally researchers need exclusive use of computing resources in order to perform experiments where timing constraints are critical. Experminents of this type cannot be performed on systems that are sharing resources like memory and disk space with other competing processes. In realizing the importance of such research HPCVL Carleton has implemented tools and proceedures to allow scientists to have exclusive use over designated computing resources.

By using schedulers like Maui and Grid Engine for the Beowulf and SunFire repectively HPCVL system administrators can reserve system resources for the exclusive use of research groups, individuals, or processes. Through the use of these tools HPCVL researchers can obtain dedicated access to computing resources without interfering with other system processes.

HPCVL Carleton's system administrators will be responsible for managing and maintaining computing resources for research groups. After requests for resource reservation have been approved by lab directors HPCVL system administrators will make the resources available to the research group(s) that require exclusive access. After a predetermined time period or once the experiments have been completed the system resources will be returned to the HPCVL user community. In order for users to ensure accurate and repeatable results for their experiments it is important that they carefully follow the scheduling policies. Failure to use scheduling tools can result in faulty system management and lost data. <
