    - High Speed Data over Wireless Systems

Led by Prof. Yiqiang Q. Zhao.

We are aiming at significantly reducing the severe impact, on the performance of end-to-end TCP error and congestion control schemes, of the inefficient cross-layer interactions caused by events occurring at the RLC layer of the UMTS system. These events include packet losses due to transmission error and increased packet transmission delay caused by RLC layer error control. As the TCP/IP protocol suite was originally designed for reliable wireline networks, some fundamental assumptions made on the protocols are implied not true for a wireless data network. The situation is getting worse with the new trend of multimedia communications where strict QoS is required. We plan to determine both TCP layer and RLC layer parameter settings to optimize the overall performance.
